The Vertical Challenge Timeline: 2002
After meeting Chris Geisler and Hobey Walker, the rig is redesigned out of metal tubing and wheelchair wheels are added to keep Brad away from the rock. This reduces friction and protects Brad's elbows and hips from the brutal abrasions suffered in the past. Testing continues at Cheakamus and Smoke Bluffs with great success.

After these tests the team finally gets onto the Chief in late September. The dangerous carry-in from the parking lot to the base of the Grand wall takes over Two hours. The team makes it up the first three pitches and stops below the Split Pillar in about five hours. The equipment proves workable, but it is uncomfortable and Brad struggles with medical problems. The pulling effort tests Brad's shoulders which, were are sore for days after the chip-fest. Brad and the team carry on with R+D throughout the winter with renewed vigor.
